Seminar about the Roots and Responses to the 2008 Global Financial Crisis

On December 11th 2008, as the economic outlook seemed as dark as the Swedish winter night, CRISMART and CEFIN arranged a seminar at the Swedish National Defence College entitled “The Roots and Responses to the 2008 Global Financial Crisis” to shed new light on what is perhaps the most complex and destabilizing crisis the world has seen in generations.

In attendance were academics, practitioners from government as well as industry, students, and representatives of the diplomatic community from around the world, including the ambassadors of China, Canada and Argentina.

The seminar brought together an array of perspectives on economic crises, financial and property market bubbles, crisis management and leadership. It opened with a keynote address by Bo Lundgren, Director of the Swedish National Debt Office, who discussed the current global financial crisis as well as his experience with managing the Swedish banking crisis of the early 1990s.

Participants included leading researchers in real estate economics, banking and finance, political science and crisis management, as well as the British ambassador to Sweden, who discussed the need to tackle both the financial and climate crises together.

Concluding the afternoon was a panel discussion with questions from the audience, which synthesized the research disciplines of the participants and provided insight on the difficulties and opportunities that the current financial crisis poses.
