Programme on European Security Research

The European Security Research Programme is a framework research and teaching programme in the Swedish National Defence College. It is financed by the Swedish Ministry of Defence and the Swedish Civil Contingencies Agency.
The programme examines the new broad role that the European Union (EU) is playing for security as well as safety – at home and abroad. Research focuses on institutional factors that shape cooperation and capacity development related to crisis management and is conducted in the following areas:
- European security
- The EU’s role for security and safety
- European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP)
- The EU and Security Sector Reform (SSR)
- Europeanisation of national security and crisis management capacity

The programme also includes teaching modules within the Swedish National Defence College and Uppsala University joint programme in Political Science with a special focus on Crisis Management and International Cooperation.

The European Security Research Programme is dedicated to high-quality scholarly research relevant to policymakers in Sweden and beyond. It investigates the constraints and opportunities for the creation of EU crisis management capacity in areas ranging from critical infrastructure protection to the European Security and Defence Policy.
