Our research
Both research and education are carried out inter-disciplinarily and in close co-operation with other departments and institutions. Specific research clusters and global networks provide the basic framework for research and training at both graduate and doctoral level. Research focus The Sociology Team has developed three areas of distinctive strength:
- Sociology at ILM focuses on the nexus between society/individual/security. In this respect, sociological research is concerned with how societies are organised in order to provide "security" to their citizens and members. In this context, sociology focuses primarily on individual and group behavior and interaction with respect to security, stability and peace, as well as perceptions and identities, societal and organisational structures.
- Sociological research at ILM focuses on questions of leadership, particularly on leadership in demanding conditions. In this field, issues such as why people act as they do in stressful and extreme situations or what constitutes the nexus between leadership/followership, organisations and culture, etcetera, are addressed.
- Sociology has established a very strong program in civil-military relations and military sociology. This is built on the department's rich tradition of fundamental contributions to military related social science, particularly in the fields of military profession, the study of military culture and civil-military relations. Sociology at ILM has become one of Europe's new leading centres for civil-military analysis and the sociology of the military organisation and profession
