Piracy research competing at European transport research conference

18 April 2012

Hans Liwång, PhD student of Military-Technology at the Swedish National Defence College, has been selected as one of five finalists in the area of Transport safety and security in The Young European Arena of Research 2012 (YEAR2012), a European competition for young researchers.

This Sunday, he will travel to Athens to present his research project, titled Risk analysis for shipping under piracy threat, at the Transport Research Arena (TRA) conference, April 22–26. Three hundred students from thirty countries are competing within six categories, of which Transport safety and security is one. During the conference, a winner for each category is chosen by a jury of experts.

Hans Liwång's study is unique in the sense that it uses state-of-the-art developments from both civilian safety research and military security practice and research, and expert knowledge from both, in order to address an urgent and pressing problem. The access to both civilian and military research and experts is a result of the possibilities offered by the Swedish National Defence College's interdisciplinary research and education focus.
