Comprehensive Approach - 2009

In August 2009, the Sociology Team initiated a research project on the topic of comprehensive approach in peace support operations.

About the project

Although there is no officially accepted definition of comprehensive approach, one could describe it as being based on the premise that peace support operations must employ the relevant civilian and military instruments in a coordinated and concerted manner in order to succeed.

Goals and aims

  • To describe how different actors formulate the concept of comprehensive approach - what they have in common and what separates them - by using a concept analysis. The focus was on three international organisations, EU, UN and NATO, as well as the four countries of Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland, who have all introduced Comprehensive Approach on a national level.
  • To create a theoretical framework for the most important conditions when establishing comprehensive approach.
