Support for doctoral theses and public defences
The Anna Lindh Library provides support from manuscript preparation through to the printed and digitally published thesis. Information about the public defence process, formal decisions and current deadlines is available in the doctoral student handbook and on mittFHS.
Manuscript preparation
Contact the library as soon as the date of the public defence has been set. We will help plan the publication and provide information about the applicable procedures and deadlines. As a rule, we need four weeks to prepare a print-ready thesis before the public posting date.

Before submitting the manuscript, you need to:
- Use the Swedish Defence University’s thesis template and avoid major layout changes at a late stage.
- ensure that the manuscript has undergone final review and approval in accordance with the department’s procedures
- secure the necessary permissions for images, maps, illustrations and previously published articles
- provide high-resolution images in print-friendly file formats; cover images should preferably be in portrait orientation
We are happy to help you use the template and meet the requirements above. Contact us and we will help ensure that everything is correct.
Production and distribution
Once the manuscript has been submitted, the library takes over and adds publication details, reviews the document’s technical quality, creates files for printing and digital publication, and produces a cover. If necessary, we will request supplementary material and then coordinate the printing with the printer.
Before publication, a publishing agreement is signed, setting out copyright-related obligations and commitments. This agreement is based on the general terms and conditions for publication in the Swedish Defence University’s series, but it also includes optional provisions governing resale and licensing. The doctoral student retains the copyright to their work but agrees that the Swedish Defence University may print, distribute and provide long-term access to the thesis. More information is available on mittFHS. You will also find the publication order form there, which you need to complete so that we can prepare the agreement.
The digital version of the thesis is registered and published in DiVA. The printed thesis may be made available for sale through the Swedish Defence University’s online bookshop or through online and physical bookshops. Resale entails no additional cost and follows a print-on-demand model, in which the end customer covers the printing cost and copies are printed upon request.
