Course content and structure

This course aims to provide insight into the complex and multifaceted relationship between war and its surroundings. It addresses five areas of relevance to the fabric and structure of society: ethics and law; state and home; architecture and design; ecology and natural science; media; and tourism. Each component focuses on the mutually constituive relationship between the area in question, its structure and trends, and war. For example: What is the relationship between architecture and warfare? What role do police logics play in war? What is the relationship between climate change and war? The course material includes analysis of warfare at strategic, operational and tactical levels.

Objectives

Upon completion of the course, the doctoral student should be able to:

  • master theoretical approaches to the study of war and warfare that are relevant to the course, and be able to reason about their epistemological assumptions
  • critically and systematically discuss strenghts and weaknesses of the study of war/warfare through analysis of contemporary societal phenomena and structures
  • show the ability to independently contribute to the research area

Transitional provisions
