Entry requirements

Accepted into a PhD programme in political science or equivalent at an international or national university.

Course content and structure

This course provides opportunities for the PhD Student to build in-depth and specialized theoretical knowledge of political science as a research subject and scientific discipline as well as some of the basic scientific problems within political science. Based on some central political science concepts, the course critically covers various theoretical lines of development within political science. It provides a thorough knowledge of the subject's principal discourses – from classical literature to contemporary research – by covering the scientific disagreements that have shaped modern political science. The course is organized in a series of compulsory seminars that emphasize interaction between teacher and student.

Objectives

Upon completion of the course the PhD student should be able to:

  • thoroughly account for and discuss the significance of various formative concepts and discourses within modern political science,

Competence and skills
  • identify and independently evaluate scientific challenges in political science,

Judgement and approach
  • account for and critically discuss political science as a scientific discipline.

Examination formats

Assessment
Scope: 7.5

Grading Scale: Fail, Pass

The examination is assessed on active and constructive participation in mandatory seminars as well asthe submission of a written examination task.

Absence from a mandatory seminarcan be compensated by a supplementary task given by the examiner.

Grading
The student is graded on a two-point grading scale: Fail (U) and Pass (G). Grading criteria are reported at the latest at the start of the course.

Restrictions in Number of Examinations
There is no limit on the total number of examination opportunities.

Other regulations

  • The course cannot be included in a degree with another course whose content fully or partially corresponds to the content of this course.
  • If the Swedish Defence University has formally decided that the doctoral student is entitled to receive special educational support due to a disability, the examiner may decide on alternative forms of examination for the student.
  • The course director will conduct an evaluation on the completion of the course, which will form the basis for any changes to the course.
