The course Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 2 is the second of the Swedish Defence University's courses in higher education pedagogy, and to take it you need to have completed Teaching and Learning in Higher Education 1 (or an equivalent to it at another university).

The course is aimed at those who work or will work as teachers and examiners in higher education at the Swedish Defence University. The course is also aimed at Armed Forces personnel who are or will be the main teachers or course coordinators on VFU courses in the Officer Programme.

Aim, learning outcomes and course content:

The course aims to further deepen the participant’s understanding for both the value systems associated with higher education and the rules governing it, with a special focus on issues regarding the overall purpose of higher education and the question of quality. Another aim is to further deepen and develop the participant’s competences as a teacher in higher education. The participant is encouraged to delve further into and from various pedagogical perspectives evolve and problematize his/her knowledge and skills regarding different types of learning environments as well as to plan, run and examine courses.

The course also aimed at further developing the participant’s skills to partake in, contribute to and lead pedagogical exchanges between colleagues, thereby contributing to the development of one’s own pedagogical awareness and skill as well as others’.

After the course, the participant is expected to be able to:

• identify and discuss pedagogical opportunities and challenges in physical and digital learning environments as well as with Artificial intelligence (AI), especially in relation to learning among individuals and groups and in connection with examination
• apply national and local rules on examination in higher education and from pedagogical perspectives discuss how different sets of rules and regulations affect educational aspects and its quality
• discuss and problematize different perspectives on what the purpose of higher education is and what academic quality entails
• reflect on the role of emotions both in relation to students’ emotional encounters during their education and in relation to the pedagogical practicalities of being a teacher
• have and lead fruitful and well-informed higher education pedagogy conversations with colleagues
• display a reflective practice in matters regarding their own academic teachership, how they engage with colleagues and students as well as the value systems associated with higher education such as democracy, academic freedom, equality, equal terms, internationalisation and sustainable development

General outlay of the course:

The course has four two-day seminar sessions that takes place on location at SEDU in Stockholm. The point of departure for the seminar discussions as well as the written assignments are the literature as well as the participants’ own experiences and reflections on the issues and perspectives put forward in the literature. Between the seminars the participant is expected to engage with the assigned literature and do a number of written assignments.

The course is examined by constructively partaking in the seminar discussions and workshops as well as by writing three shorter texts and a longer independently written assignment that also includes an opposition/defence task.

After completing the course, you will receive a certificate.

The course comprises 200 study hours (which corresponds to 7,5 higher education credits). The maximum number of course participants is 10. The time needed to take the course is financed by your own department. It is therefore important that you have talked with your head of division about taking the course and that time has been set a side for you to take the course.

The articles that are required reading for the course you download yourself. If there are any mandatory books they will be given to you to keep prior to or at the beginning of the course.

Course with IRL seminar sessions. The course comprises 200 study hours (which corresponds to 7,5 higher education credits). Max number of course participants is 10.

Mandatory seminar-sessions: 4-5 February, 18-19 March, 22-23 April, 27-28 May.
