Workshop on research in classified environments

The Research School for War and Defence together with the Scandinavian Journal of Military Studies invites doctoral students and researchers to a workshop on research in classified environments, methodological challenges and publication strategies on 17 September 2026 at the Swedish Defence University.

Researchers in the field of war and military studies are expected to navigate security concerns, research ethics and academic standards. As the security situation in Europe changes, this ability becomes increasingly pertinent, and relevant to a growing number of researchers.

This workshop will address questions such as: Are there any unique methodological approaches to working in classified environments? How can you enhance your chances of publishing your research in a way that satisfies both academic standards and security concerns? Are there any alternative ways to publish your research?

We will discuss the process from data collection to methodological challenges and publication strategies. The workshop will not provide definite answers, but invites to a forum to discuss these challenges in relation to practical experience and state-of-the-art research.

Interested in participating?

Write an e-mail to ralo@fak.dk describing how your research relates to classified environments (it does not have to be directly related to classified material). Indicate how far you are in your process (if you are a doctoral student).

Deadline for application: June 16, 2026.
