Soldier-Scholar Conference 2025
25-26 September 2025 at the Swedish Defence University
On 25-26 September, the first Soldier-Scholar Conference will be held at SEDU. The core objective of the conference is to promote research relevant for professional military practices (such as warfighting, strategy and tactics, military organisation and profession, military leadership, military technology and defence planning), and to foster a strong international network of soldier-scholars.
The conference is structured around a key-note speaker, several panels, roundtables and a dinner. While paper presentations are reserved for military doctoral students and soldier-scholars who want to present their ongoing research, all are welcome to attend the conference and participate in the discussions. The annual conference is the core event of the Research School for War and Defence.

Soldier-Scholars in the 21st Century

On 21 May, the Research School for War and Defence invites doctoral students and soldier-scholars to a panel on Soldier-Scholars in the 21st Century.
Soldier-scholars are becoming an increasingly common phenomenon in Western militaries. What are the advantages they offer to their own militaries and to those of the allies and partners? What do they offer to academe? Join us to find answers to these and other questions relevant to the current and future military effectiveness of NATO forces.
The panel includes soldier-scholars from several countries, who will initiate a conversation about what it means to be a soldier-scholar in the 21st century.
The panel is followed by post-panel drinks in the officer’s mess.
