I am a Professor at the Department of Leadership and Command and Control at the Swedish Defence University. My research primarily concerns leadership, learning, and collaboration in military and civil-military organisations, with a particular focus on how individuals and organisations develop the capacity to act together under complex and demanding conditions.
I received my PhD from Stockholm University in 2004 with a dissertation on officer education, professional competence, and professional legitimacy, and I have been working at the Swedish Defence University since 2000. My subsequent research has addressed, among other topics, the officer profession, military leadership and education, cultural encounters in international military operations, team training and team learning, as well as crisis management and civil-military collaboration.
I have extensive experience in advanced leadership and executive education. For fourteen years, I was responsible for leadership courses for senior officers in the Swedish Armed Forces. I have also been responsible for the leadership component of the Strategic Executive Development Programme, a programme for senior civilian and military leaders preparing for the most demanding leadership positions within government agencies and the Swedish Armed Forces. In addition, I have been responsible for the Swedish Defence University’s higher education pedagogy programme.
In recent years, my research has focused particularly on Sweden’s total defence system and collaboration between civilian authorities and the Swedish Armed Forces. Through field studies and observations of exercises and real-world crisis management, I have examined the organisational, pedagogical, and leadership-related conditions required for collaborative exercises to result in learning and enhanced operational capability.
The combination of my research on leadership, professions, and organisations, my extensive experience in educating senior military and civilian leaders, and my empirical research within the Swedish Armed Forces and Sweden’s total defence system characterises my academic and pedagogical profile.
