Om Aaron

Beskrivning om dig själv
Dr Aaron P. Jackson is Associate Professor in War Studies at Swedish Defence University. His research and teaching are in the fields of military studies, operational art, military design thinking, planning processes and evaluation, military doctrine, and emergency management. He is extensively published in these fields. He holds a Doctorate of Philosophy in International Relations and, in December 2025, he was confirmed as Docent. His prior academic appointments include Academic Year 2018-19 Distinguished Visiting Professor of Defence Studies at Canadian Forces College in Toronto, Canada, and a range of visiting roles at defence and war colleges in Australia and North America.

Prior to commencing his role at Swedish Defence University, Dr Jackson was an Australian Public Servant for 15 years. His appointments included Senior Researcher and Discipline Leader in Defence Science and Technology Group, and Joint Doctrine Developer at the Australian Defence Force (ADF) Joint Doctrine Centre. In 2016, he deployed on Operation Accordion (Middle East Region) as a Defence Civilian. Joint doctrine publications he has authored include the second (2015) edition of the ADF’s joint operations planning process doctrine, the Joint Military Appreciation Process. In 2021-22, he was Commander of the State Control Centre – Health (SCCH) in the South Australian Department of Health and Wellbeing. In this senior leadership appointment, he commanded an interagency organisation comprising over 300 staff, which coordinated outside-of-hospital aspects of the Department’s COVID-19 pandemic response. During this period, SCCH assisted over 10,000 vulnerable people and directly contributed to preventing the state’s hospital system from being overwhelmed.

In addition to his civilian roles, Lieutenant Colonel Jackson served part time in the Australian Army Reserve for over 24 years. An Infantry officer, he deployed on Operation Astute (peacekeeping in Timor Leste), Operation Resolute (Australian border security), Operation Okra (building partner capacity in Iraq) and Operation COVID-19 Assist (domestic emergency response). He is a former Commanding Officer of 10th/27th Battalion, The Royal South Australia Regiment, a light infantry unit headquartered in Adelaide, South Australia. For exemplary performance in a range of operational, staff and training appointments, he has been awarded an ADF Joint Commendation, an Australian Army Commendation, an Australia Day Medallion, and a US Army Achievement Medal. In 2024, he authored the year’s most viewed article published on the Australian Army’s official blog, The Cove.
