Niklas Karlén is Assistant Professor at the Department of Security, Strategy and Leadership at the Swedish Defence University and Senior Lecturer at the Department of Peace and Conflict Research at Uppsala University. He received his PhD from Uppsala University in 2017.

His main research interests cover third-party interventions, international dimensions of civil war and US foreign policy. His current work focuses on external state support to warring parties, invitations to intervene, ex-combatant networks, foreign policy decision-making, and government policies toward ethnic groups. Dr. Karlén’s work has appeared in outlets such as Journal of Peace Research, Terrorism and Political Violence and SIPRI Yearbook (Oxford University Press). In his research he mainly uses quantitative methods, elite interviews, archival work and social network analysis.
