Axel-Charles Monin Nylund is a doctoral student at the Swedish Defence University's Department of War Studies and non-commissioned officer (OR-7) in the Swedish Armed Forces. Previous experience includes serving in MINUSMA as a military interpreter and political advisor to the United Nations Force Commander. Drawing on his firsthand involvement in Malian ceasefire and DDR negotiations, he authored a book on military peacekeeping mediation in Mali with Lieutenant General Dennis Gyllensporre.
He holds an LLB from Queen Mary, University of London, and an MA in International Affairs (Cyber Security) from the Defence Studies Department at King's College London. Before joining the Swedish Defence University's War Studies Department, he worked as a Research Assistant in the Department of Political Science.
His PhD research explores the integration of software-based defence systems and data architectures underpinning and enabling contemporary military doctrine and 21st century warfare in the Digital Age. The research assesses state power in the context of expert systems that are distributed and maintained through corporate-owned software stacks, including those enabling various forms of machine learning applications and model deployments. The work aims to map the evolving constellation of actors involved in developing and deploying AI technologies to understand their implications for sovereignty.
