She explores France's nuclear strategy
How is France’s nuclear strategy shaped and sustained over time? This is the focus of doctoral student July Decarpentrie at the Swedish Defence University.
July Decarpentrie’s research centers on the French nuclear strategic approach, with a particular focus on how it evolves and is maintained in response to changing strategic needs and geopolitical challenges.
“I look not only at strategic reasoning, but also at the social, cultural and psychological dynamics that influence nuclear policy”, she says.
Her research spans several fields. One day, she may analyse military capabilities such as second-strike survivability. The next, she may explore the historical development of French society and nation-building.
Civilian and military perspectives
The choice to pursue doctoral studies at the Swedish Defence University was deliberate. The university brings together military and civilian perspectives in a shared environment.
“It’s a place where knowledge from both worlds meets. If I have a specific military question, I know exactly who to ask. At the same time, the PhD programme includes teaching in both civilian and military education, which provides valuable and varied experience”, says July Decarpentrie.
She describes doctoral studies as demanding but rewarding. The relatively small size of the university fosters close collaboration and strong professional networks.
Looking ahead, she aims to continue working within her field and sees opportunities in both academia and practice.
“My goal is to build a bridge between research and practice, and to contribute knowledge that is relevant in both contexts.”
In brief
At the Swedish Defence University since: 2022.
In my free time: I know that in our overly achievement-driven and productivity-focused society, we feel the need to stay busy even during our free time. Yet, I truly enjoy doing nothing, simply being present and savouring the moment with a cup of tea.
Most recently read book: 1984 by George Orwell
Hidden talent: I can make chocolate disappear.
Happy to discuss: Traveling, cooking, history and cultural facts, nukes, and fun facts.
Your motivation as a researcher: Researching is one thing, but sharing what you discover is where the magic happens.
