War studies
War studies
War studies can only be studied at the Swedish Defence University, where it is the main subject in our officer education. The subject concerns war, warfare, and the exercise of military power, but also civil–military relations, total defence, and defence planning.
Defence planning, military strategy, and ethics
If you choose to study War Studies, you will explore how wars are fought and how armed forces are employed in different operations, as well as the ethical aspects of warfare. You will also gain insight into the political dimension of war and warfare through the study of military strategy and defence planning. The exercise of military power and the role of military organisations are often central in matters of security, peace, and development, and War Studies provides a deeper understanding of many international issues.
When is war studies applied?
War studies is applied in activities that focus on building military capability and conducting military operations, such as within the Swedish Armed Forces. It also forms the academic foundation of officer training.
Programmes
At the Swedish Defence University, you can study war studies in the Master’s programme War and Defence. War studies is also the main subject of the war studies and nautical specialisations within the Officer's Programme, as well as in the Joint Advanced Command and Staff Programme.
