The Siegroth Prize
The Siegroth Prize is a relatively new award with a long history and tradition originating from the Royal Södermanland Regiment. The prize is awarded to military teachers who have demonstrated outstanding teaching expertise.
The Siegroth Prize was established in 2017, but its origins can be traced back to the Södermanland Regiment in Strängnäs in the late 18th century, when Gustav Adolf von Siegroth was the regiment’s commanding officer. Siegroth was deeply committed to the education of officers and believed that they should receive both practical and theoretical training. He therefore established a military academy at Malmahed.
The prize was initiated by the Royal Södermanland Regiment Officers’ Association. Its purpose is to recognise and reward teaching excellence among military teachers.
Who is eligible for the prize?
The recipient must be a military teacher working on one of the officer programmes at the Swedish Defence University. This also includes teachers who teach and supervise students during their work-based education and training (VFU) at Swedish Armed Forces schools and training establishments.
Who can submit a nomination?
The following are eligible to nominate candidates for the prize:
- Employees of the Swedish Defence University.
- Employees of Swedish Armed Forces schools and training establishments who are involved in the Swedish Defence University’s work-based education and training (VFU).
- Students on the Officers’ Programme or participants in commissioned military education and training provided on behalf of the Swedish Armed Forces.
Assessment criteria
Nominees for the Siegroth Prize are assessed according to the following criteria:
- the ability to deliver teaching that promotes students’ development and learning and generates engagement and interest among students
- innovation in teaching
- the ability to apply experience and knowledge from the officer profession and relate this to a scientific basis
- the ability to advance higher education teaching and learning through dialogue and collaboration with colleagues, students and other stakeholders within and outside the University
- educational leadership and collaboration.
Honour, medal and prize money
In addition to the honour and a diploma, the recipient receives SEK 20,000 and the Siegroth Medal.
An assessment panel ranks the nominations received and then proposes a recipient to the Officers’ Association, which makes the final decision. The prize is presented at the Swedish Defence University’s annual ceremony.
