Guidance on Artificial Intelligence (AI)
A wide range of AI tools are now available that can generate text, images and video content. This guidance is intended for students and participants in commissioned education and training programmes at the Swedish Defence University.
A text-based AI assistant can generate both short and extended texts. The content generated depends on the prompt (question or instruction) provided and the AI tool being used. AI offers considerable opportunities for exploring ideas, developing suggestions for written work and compiling information, for example in the form of an overview of a particular subject. It is important to critically evaluate sources and clearly indicate when AI-generated text has been used.
AI Tools and Assessment
There is a risk that students may misuse AI tools in connection with assessments. Students must therefore receive clear instructions on when and how AI tools may be used during a course and in assessments. Teachers and students are encouraged to discuss issues of ethics and academic integrity in relation to AI.
The Swedish Defence University recommends the following guidelines:
- Students must not submit AI-generated text as their own work. Doing so constitutes an attempt to mislead examiners and is regarded as academic misconduct.
- Where students are permitted to use AI tools, for example to explore ideas, develop arguments or improve a text, they should disclose their use of these tools in accordance with the instructions provided by the course coordinator or teacher.
- Whether students are permitted to use AI tools for peer assessment or when acting as an opponent in an academic examination should be clarified. In such cases, students should also explain how they have used the AI tools.
Suspected Attempts to Mislead Examiners
Where a student is suspected of having used an AI tool in an unauthorised manner in connection with an assessment, the matter must be investigated. If there are reasonable grounds to suspect an attempt to mislead examiners (academic misconduct), the case must be formally reported and handled in the same way as other disciplinary matters.
